Turning a single video budget into an album’s worth of surreal home movies

Right okay. So today I'm going to talk about these videos that we made my band made yeah as you said an album probably about two or three years ago now and yeah we made a video for you song I'm just going to flick through some pictures kind of slowly okay all right.
This is just these are just going to be flavors of what they're like because there's so many and talking about each one doesn't feel like the right thing to do so the reason why we did so many in the first place is because I suppose it felt to me a bit like sometimes you know you spend such a long time or you think about making an album a project orally and then you don't sometimes you'll have different people making videos for different songs and for us I suppose it felt like it'd be good to tie it all together.
And if you're gonna have a strong audio aesthetic then you should think about that visually which I think people do but I guess we wanted to really drive that home somehow so basically the consistent visual things that we decided to stick with whether I mean in order to in order to kind of display this consistency we had to make more than one you know example of that.
So we made I don't know went on and on and nothing seemed to stick out particularly from the album to lead in that kind of general way that you do with a standout song or anything like that.
So anyway we went ahead and started making all these videos right the sort of inspiration for the videos came from the content of the songs which was all about at the time I was living in this house and all of the songs were based on stories from the house and things that were going on in the house and with the people I lived with so it sort of made sense to make videos about the house as well.
And in particular one housemate that I had was really inspiring to me for this because she was really sort of the line of work she was in was quite unusual and she was really interested in all this kit stuff and all this kind of there's sort of loads of rubbish everywhere in our house and just full of these trinkets and colors and it was sort of she was really brushing and kind of proud of that. And so that's a lot of the kind of visual background for all of that all of this I don't know if you can tell it here I should probably look at these a bit yeah that's my phone so also okay.
So we so we went out to do all these videos we had to make some rules because first of all we're not experienced video makers I mean I'm not sure that necessarily makes a difference in terms of this.
But we didn't have much time it's quite ambitious. And we spent our video budget for one video on a bunch of videos so in general each video is just it's sometimes it's sort of one take and it was sort of down to us as being kind of actors or performers in the band to do a performance that was good and effective and accurate and contained all the stuff it needed to do so there wasn't a lot of time in the edit room or the edit period of time you know arguing about what was right what were we just sort of that was down to us on the day getting the performance right.
And then also so yeah one shot and or a long shot that was one thing the other thing was consistent visual visual consistent visual so you see there's this frame around it it's like already it's got its own tv set and all the background is my house sort of sort of semi accurately and drawn on pain and that's that.
That's consistent throughout and the reason why there's this sort of fake world the reason why that felt like the right thing to do is I guess I've always find that I've always found it a nice thing when people and cartoons exist coexist together I guess that's from my childhood and I suppose that's also from I think it's because it's sort of more impossible to be existing with a cartoon and even sort of something cgi'd because because it's a two-dimensional object and all of this wrong because perspective even if it is fake right is still more impossible and I suppose I like the idea of that and anyway developing cartoons was going to be impossible for us.
So we just made the background it's pretty simple to do we did we had to come up with a few things on the spot to to get away with what we were trying to do so obviously she's falling through the sky I don't know that is obvious but she's falling through the sky here. And we didn't have any ropes or anything like that.
So we just put racer on a stool on her belly and started to sort of move around you can't see but it moves a bit and blew a hair dryer in her hair and then.
This is obviously still so we could just move it down.
And then she falls here. And it's I don't know it was quite a simple process once we kind of got the language of him I suppose I mean it's although although this all ties together it's not it's not particularly narrative I mean the whole album anyway is kind of about you know it's kind of nonsensical and that's kind of part part it's supposed to be part of it you know it's it's it's sort of sort of thought it's like that and trashy like that.
So I mean there's there is a sort of beginning and an end to each thing.
But there's not really much story in him particularly I'm just going to flick through these a bit faster this is mark this is my garden I don't live in that house anymore unfortunately yeah you know we had some typical music video subject matter in there like a party and but oh yeah the other thing I wanted to say was that the reason for me another reason for making this sort of surreal fake fake slash real world is that the subject matter as much as it looks kitchen all of this stuff it's all really about really boring stuff so sitting in the garden and parties and you know things are sitting around rehearsing and making a phone call just you know really mundane everyday bits and bobs like what else first right down here I mean I think that's all there really is to say about it I think I'm running near to being out of time my ten minutes but I'll play you I'll play your video it's I've chosen one that I think it explains the idea of a performance is in it's it's pretty much one take and also I'm not in it.
