Sometimes you need to break the old to make something fresh
“Creativity is like chopping up vinyl; sometimes you need to break the old to make something fresh.”
Hello yeah as as we just said I normally have a partner in crime but he's not here. So if I Stumble I normally kind of pass over to Chris so I'll try my best we're going to be talking about two videos oh I am sorry see already doing Wei they are Wy and benger I'm just going to go straight into it. So this is Wy numbers in action.
So this this was a bit of a strange one the way it started most of the time we get a a track sent through to our production company and we say whether we like it or not whereas this one came directly from the commissioner who's kind of now a friend and he literally I can't read you can read it he just said he's got a track for Wy the the money is not great but the track is and we agreed and but as soon as we as soon as we kind of said to ourselves oh we want to do something this we kind of stumbled across a bit bit of a problem our W is a bit of a difficult character at times and our production company had done two videos for him before and the first one which was wearing Rolex he he turned up and didn't decided that he didn't like the idea so he he kind of walked off set and then the second one he at the last minute he was they decided not to write him in it but he didn't want any part ofic he thought it was I won't go into details you can look it up online so our production company were like there's no way you're doing a video for Ry but we persuaded them.
And we came up with this this kind of idea of again saying it now after the problems we wanted to feature Wy as much as possible and basically we came up with this kind of this should just play boy a listed to get it right I know it's all about I reinvent I'm like a brand new signing I talk about the little ladder we are climing music ain't a thing because I know I put the time in if it's an issue and you're going to need tissue cuz your eyeballs are watering you can stop whining winging change what you're thinking I'm all for putting the pr I'm a yeah you get the idea. And so we kind of quickly quickly came up with this idea.
And then we were like oh well you know it' be good if we could kind of work into it the because we knew the budget was so tight we kind of had to plan it out to kind of within an inch of its life really.
So we came up with this idea of showing the kind of process of a music video and how that could become a visual for it.
So we did this like rather ambitious test where we just took a picture kept taking pictures and just foot dropped out me to see how many we could fit in and then at some for some reason at one point this seemed like a good amount and then we decided to do a lot less because you know as soon as someone moves in that the the kind of idea of rotoscoping them all would be an absolute nightmare and then we found our space and so we kind of we're very meticulous cuz we've come from a a graphic design background we like to know exactly how things are going to work and and how things will be so this was a mockup we did and then we had this idea of again showing off the process what if again to make it easier for ourselves but that kind of came the visual if we could have him in these t-shirts that visualize what part of the song he is so as the video goes on you kind of seeing yeah the process so this is another test this is you'll see in a minute just watch the the version of Chris on the chair it's quite funny so this is the space and this was like you know from where we were with the original one where.
There was so many you know this was just really crudely done and then Chris did this and the chair broke but you know like those are the kind of things that like you know that would have been amazing if that had happened to iy on the day and yeah you get you get the idea.
And then and then once we've kind of everyone's like in a similar place to our vision because that's that's something.
That's got harder to direct to your you have this thing in your head this we hopefully me and Chris have it collectively and you're trying to you're trying to get what you're seeing out there to be the same as what's in your head so that's kind of why we we go to quite Great Lengths to to storyboard and and show like our workings I guess so these are the story boards you know they're very rough my hand is bad these are some some kind of things from the day so basically just to this is the detail we went into so each color is a version of of Wy and each color relates to whether it's a verse or chorus and written off the side of the set were literally were written on a marker pen what Wy had to do on them.
So we could kind of I it's ridiculous say but we literally go okay Wy stand here.
And then walk along that line and then when you get to the Cross clap your hands and then that was it.
So we kind of we need the set and stuff all the different bits so yeah we it. Basically we won quite a few Awards with it. And it I think it was one of those ones where it's it was like a simple idea and and yeah.
I think it kind of resonated because it was something different for w so that's this is what's what's weird about.
This is this is this is the commissioner who kind of took the first stab in the dark to to actually have the guts to go we we can do this because yeah Wy can be a bit of a character so sorry my my fault this is the video cool there kind of cars on like this but you can see like we had the reason for the market you say that the reason for the markings was so that you know in post- production terms this would this would be quite an expensive thing because someone's got to go through and cut out every kind of scene and then layer them up.
So we knew we didn't have the time or the money to do that.
So we had to kind of we had to know that there would be enough space between each character so that they wouldn't overlap so where you know you can literally see he's you know he's walking along a blue line there.
So that okay the gap between him and the two guys of the back is going to be okay I don't know whether Wy had any idea what he was doing on the day to be honest he he's he's he's a he's a very very interesting character and what was amazing about him was that his his his performance you know some people you have to go through so many takes to get them get a good performance and he was his best one was F first one every single time he's he's quite incredible when you're when you're watching him live yeah. So you can you can watch watch it the rest of this if you want online so I'll move on.
So the second video I'm going to talk about is benger and actually this was maybe this is a maybe this is a something we should pick up on.
But this was a similar case actually was that we got sent the song by the I don't think he wasn't the commissioner but he was the he was kind of the creative director of of bengo that's what manager there you go being shouted at he was a manager of Fenger and yeah he he liked our work and our our producer Academy again said no there's not enough money you're not doing it. And I think we I don't know whether we actively go oh no we want to do it but sometimes like you know a lot of the cases the the kind of the better the song the less money there is and so yeah you can see there it's like yeah we got a track video I want something viral it doesn't have to be the whole song which again for us was quite a cool thing it's like it's not 3 and a half minutes it can be shorter so when we when we heard the song because we kind of knew benger's music we were we were watching on Soundcloud I don't know most of you probably know know what SoundCloud like he get gives you a visual of the Soundwave and the first thing we we kind of when before we even click play we could kind of see that.
There was a big drop and we were like oh you can see the drops coming and then we listened to it a few times and we both sat there. And we were like there something quite nice about like visualizing what you're what you're seeing in the music. And so we kind of we were thinking about this this sound wave and how you could visualize that physically and you know one of us just drew oh yeah' be cool to to do like do the the notes with records and then we were like oh yeah you could do the the play head on a radio control car and we went as you always do we went way too far and then we were like no no no it's just just the records that's what's that's the kind of gem of the idea right.
So the idea was that like you would almost like each note or each you know kind of wave of the sound would would be represented in a record and we started doing some quite nice mockups and as we normally do go oh it's going to look great and then we got to the kind of fundamentals about thinking about if we could actually do this.
And then not only could we do it for the money because we don't normally think about that but could we could we actually do could it.
Actually be done like where' you get the records from like structural structural kind of side of it. And so we had to do a lot of MTH again which we're I can hold our my hand up we're not very good at Mass because what happened was is that you had to work out what what frame rate you would you would animate it at and how many records you would need and whether that would even go in time with the song so I think yeah you can see the file we we did and that was the actual song more mockups and then.
I did this test cuz like I think Chris was kind of he was running away with it at that point and I was like no I don't I don't know if this is actually going to work.
So I just did a an animation in After Effects and we just just literally just animated the sound what Chris had done in illustrator and just kind of animated it to the song and I didn't get very far cuz it took. So long but at this even at this stage you like oh this you know this this could work I think I got to just just to the truck yeah there you go that's as far as I could be bothered at that point it was like yeah let's go let's go and pester our producer to make make this so again storyboarding and and everything like that.
And this is one of those things where like it kind of still happens now but like because there's no there was no money you you just have to make do with what you what you've got and what you can do so you know. That's me.
And then Chris I'm I'm sticking labels on to you pre-used vinyl like kind of out of date out of stock vinyl and then Chris is cleaning them because they were so filthy from from the machine and we had loads of great helpers who were you know helping us helping us on the day and what what what's weird is we had to we had to make the sculpture first and then animate it animate it backwards so because it's a fixed structure if you imagine there would be no way of putting them on one at a time.
So we had to build it.
And then literally cut them off one in in essence one frame at a time and yeah you see this is like a lot further on they more broken and wasted and yeah again we it did it did very well like it was kind of a weird one because it wasn't a music video it's in in in a typical terms it was like a little bit of the song it wasn't the full 3 minutes it people didn't really know what to make of it which in a way is good but what's amazing is that you can sometimes you can do things and you can it's where they lead with projects that's quite amazing that especially with the internet and things like that these days is that. So it's kind of Gone full circle so we did we came up with this idea because of SoundCloud and then SoundCloud saw it and the CEO I can't remember his full name Alex something he he emailed us and said oh I I saw the video and I really like it I'm in London on some Tech Conference in some fancy hotel do you want to come and meet me. And we were like yeah sure and then we went and met him and um I've got the red light and then we were we were telling him about the story The reason we came up with the video was because of SoundCloud and he was like what I've I've got to have this.
And we were like well we destroyed it. And we showed him pictures of it destroyed and he was just like he he he did look like we killed his puppy and then. And we're like oh but we could maybe you know we could remake it and he was like okay let's let's remake it.
And then and it's yeah it's crazy that. Now it's it's kind of basically going to go over to their new offices in Berlin and it's going to be a sculpture in this they've got this kind of like sky deck thing and yeah it's just it's mental that we did this video for no money and it's ended up being in sancloud head office which is which is pretty cool so this is the video and I'll I'll shut up
