“A lot of you've been to art school and find it so hard when you get outside to continue the thinking that you've been taught to do. I suppose this is just about reminding you of all the important things that you need to remember.”

0:24thank you very much.

0:26So I have Heroes like all of you do and undoubtedly my greatest hero is Paul Arden who sadly now deceased embodied Art School thinking and flew the flag for it for the whole of his life.

0:47So I agree really with the two speakers that we've just had definitely with darl and certainly with Dean Dean I think had the great good luck and Imagination to continue School thinking after he left he's doing amazing things I suppose my talk is about the importance of art skill thinking and attitude that once you've adopted it should never leave you a lot of you've been to art school and find it so hard when you get outside to continue the thinking that you've been taught to do and I suppose this is just about reminding you of all the important things that you need to remember remember so to begin with be bloody minded so bloody mindedness is refusing to compromise this is a photograph taken from a brief set by Paul Ard Kingston Sarah Jin was absolutely determined to produce a brilliant image and she talked an Essex abattoir into giving her a freshly slaughtered Pig which she then drove to Kingston at 6 :30 in the morning persuaded her flatmate to pose nude with inid for most of the day until she got the shots she liked and afterwards they got into a creative review photographic issue so a brilliant image but it's all about Not Giving in you need to be loud James titton invented a camera lens that was deciel sensitive it only opened when the sound emitted by the person being photographed was so loud at hurt so here you have completely honest portraits of pain R James titon who did the and Sam who's just scary another thing you know be audacious Hannah Shipley stole photographs in a photo booth she stuck the camera in and took a photograph just as the first flush went off this just really Brave and this is no You probably all know this picture one of our great alumni students Luke Evans went into the Apple Mac shop and stole pictures from photob booth that they had taken preining teenagers it was for statement on British youth and he won a dnad pencil with it so stealing works irreverence you need to be very irreverent so this is Josh a project about Crash one substance meeting another.

3:40So they made a clay model of my head and then the whole group bashed it into smotherin pretty horrible really. Actually probably better than the original another experimental you've got to be experimental Kingston is all about trying things out so ♪

4:17it's not right music sorry that's the wrong music what's Spotify doing on better sorry me and computers ♪

5:49so that was a one day project on make a musical instrument and again it was Luke just playing around with some batons and a sheet metal but to walk into the studio and see students producing such brilliant work is more inspirational than I can explain so you need to be obsessed a self initiated project two students were obsessed with being the hardest working team in the self-initiated project.

6:17So they spent 48 Hours blowing up 2,880 balloons popping them tying them popping them.

6:27And then lacing them together for a piece of graphic information that ended up looking like this the hours and hours they spent doing it they were the most hardest working team but to be obsessed to that extent is a really important thing so hungry so Guinness Book of Records attempt to make the smallest crazy golf game out of bread it was 36 Loaves and 18 French Batts and these are the winners holding their trophies and that's Jackson playing they didn't win the attempt actually I think someone had done it better daring so how far are you going to go to prove your pro your your point so this is some people who wanted to test what the real meaning of Limitless drinks in restaurants could do for them.

7:25So they made invisible suits and out of plastic and during a whole day sitting at tables they slipped an enormous amount of food they tried it in a Chinese a Chinese restaurant eat as much as you like and in Pizza Hut and those were the outfits and what they got at the end of the day so of course you need to be anarchic you need to break things up you need to be constantly making and breaking to find out how things work how else do you invent something new unless you understand exactly what the nature of it is so this is jelly being broken up for the crush project.

8:05This is har just me dismantling three couches to try and work out what the nature of couches are why they are so important in a home why is the couch the home.

8:15And this was two students who discovered they wanted to get their fridge removed but they found if they paid for a fridge to be removed it was really expensive so they found that if they dismantled the fridge and sent it by mail it was cheaper so that's them dismantling it. And this was a collaborative project some illustration and Graphics students shut themselves in the white room for a week to emulate Sweatshop conditions during which time they made the amount of 10p coins that a sweatsh shop worker would make in a year and coins like this.

8:57So they ended up with a pile of coins that was what a sweatshop worker would ear in a year. And it was an appalling site or you just try things out see how they work so you got to be stubborn really stubborn step one experiment step two fail imagine how many times you have to do that to get this there's two on there.

9:26So I wonder what that's going to do awesome and of course you've got to be brilliant so the this was a project the challenge was make lift of make water lift things so Matt and his group filled 36 hypodermic stringes with less than a liter of water and managed to lift a nin stained person I have a film of that.

10:50But I haven't got time to show so many films but there was a general in the room okay.

10:57So you need to Bear your soul and other things so collaborative project interactive it was about how do people judge people once their face sh facial features and clothes have been removed do they judge them by height by weight by longevity by what they could be used for and then we asked students to it's not working yeah oh sorry then we asked students to assess what they thought the right measurement was and this is Millie's project it was about how naked do you have to be to feel naked so she made a latex suit of a man's naked body and then it suggested that he wore it outside and he found that he didn't actually walk down the street but he found that walking around the college in a suit made of latex he stopped feeling naked although you could see him he wasn't really naked so great project there's no such thing as going too far for the purposes of these shots I will call the people who did this project dick and funny this was a project about nightmare that that is a testical and this is a vagina so How brave do you have to do and I'm not just putting these in because they're Sensational I think they're fantastic images two first years did this the kind of attention to detail and the beauty and the lighting of it sensitivity is awesome so you got to be very very brave polarization process it's been combined with poly and basically we test it out. And it turns out it's pretty D strong just to prove that I've made some body armor you know if anyone feeling strong want to punch me in a stomach go right ahead [Applause]

13:13[Laughter]

13:17protected because of the structure I've made it's it's Distributing that weight around I've also got some metal and wooden sticks harder man ♪

13:36[Laughter]

13:52again basically you can see the damage to my lovely form [Laughter]

14:05did actually me one weakest I have this to be where my diaphragm is so this can be used for you know going out and about you know if you're feeling going somewhere dodging in London for possibly car crashes and just random people with sledgehammers and stuff some sometimes when you push students to such degrees of Ingenuity you have to go to some really keen crits and sometimes they go too far I left out a bit that I can't show anyone it's gone to Red so I'm going to have to stop above all be out there. And that's my fil [Applause]
