Six years of no-brief, no-budget art direction for fabric’s legendary club flyers
“There wasn't a brief and as most of the project that I've been involved there was no brief no budget — so it was about improvising every month coming up with a different idea.”
Hi everyone this is a Roberto speaking I'm gonna show you a bit of what I've done in the past six year for fabric hopefully some of you will know the club at the moment obviously is shot and the stock hopefully will bring you know a bit of a fight for reopening soon next to the next month I'm gonna start these showing you work for me everything started and it's the the foldable flyer fabric where you know I basically started my Oh the connection between and between me and fabric started from this piece of paper when I came first into England I was literally amazed by step by the quality of the the the creativity inside a piece of a knife three foldable paper and I can't believe that you know after a few years later. I was actually in charge doing it myself sorry this is a probably one of the first project I did for fabric and as you can see you know it's an use really poor props all the scrap wood was from the fabric office why why they were doing the renovation. There wasn't a brief and as most of the project that I've been involved there was no brief no budget so it it was about improvising every month coming up with a different idea and making sure that the idea was also usable on different platform so you will see a variety of different technique and medium they've have been exploring in the past six years photography was the one that I use the most typography was was was also very important for me because in the end what you have to do was basically communicate who was playing on the club in fruit typography I managed to you know very simply and nicely just communicate you know the the artists that were playing at the club this is another iconic project one of the first I did with a photographer Matt Burch and you know this guy do you see here is my friend still basically you know we I with at that time you know I didn't have any model available so I just thought that this guy was the right guy for the project. And it involved like building props based on Luigi Serafini encyclopedia collects Seraphin Janos will build some really weird and quite strange object there's always been a bit of a you know this sense of awkward and in the fabric alcohol that's me behind the tree doing a massive bubble one of the project I was really you know proud it was really simple and really fun you know like making bubbles in the freezing cold in December you know to have an image for this for January this is a be another quite sinister and we made illustrations that we did with my friend Luca as you can see there's a you know a baby into a someone had some eyes you know on a kidney and human heart in the back of her head this project was probably one of the the only project that was showcasing sound-related imagery fabric probably in 17 years never used any sort of you know our instrument or anything and that was the only experiment that I thought was quite cool you know creating with the CGI imagery some sort of an environment like a clean cleaner room kind of place a bit alien mushroom you know you said you had a lot of mushroom and I instantly for about it so you know again another project with no brief we just basically for okay what's next and I was really.
Actually inspired by you know the you know the the the shapes of the mushroom and the colors and I decided to do an a Serie of them and just taking them in a completely alien and unexplored environment I would say I remember they died when I pitched the idea to the guys because the guys inside the office I didn't have a client you know being a in-house or director you. Basically just walked to the promotion team and just say what do you think I'm doing a serial of a space mushroom that's what I said and they were like a bit I don't know they were like a bit you know not sure about that I would say also because you know the connection of mushroom drugs and night-night life wasn't were the best idea. But in the end you know they were really happy and I was as well these was for me one of the probably the the most important project that we did for the fabric birthday which happen every every year it's about 30 hours of right non-stop so we were trying to catch the energy of the club of the club and the people obtained in the night so some of the models you know wearing really you know we're brief and the idea and they were gonna be unsure about doing these but we only had like five five chances because these bright and these sugar glasses the one day they use in a movie it's very expensive so you know you only we didn't have a budget again you know so you know five just chances to just actually this measure a piece of a glass on some one side and then after the mushrooms why not see life you know so big trip again to Billingsgate market all night looking for the weirdest fishes and crabs taken into the fabric offices smell of fish for two days yeah another birthday weekend project this time again we we wanted to recreate the energy that we managed to catch with the breaking glass project through a different technique quite interesting this one because we basically what you see it's all done in camera obviously and I mean all these shots that show you is not been anything has been shot these technique we photograph the model while being it by tonic water so this guy was basically in a inflatable swimming pool in room one of the fabric club and the reaction of the queen in which is an ingredient of tonic water with the flash UV light just turns all the rich or blue next after the mushroom again we fall why not carnivorous plants but this time. Basically we again we drove to South of England somewhere from a cannabis plant specialists spend the old day looking for the weirdest plants ever.
And then taking them into a studio and photographing them you know on a very clean background with a bit of a you know arrangement ♪
and this is my last project which I'm really proud of the powder paint again this guy was basically jumping on a trampoline and six seven people were involved through empower him it was a fun shot but I just thought that this image for me represent you know the energy and the passion of the people you know behind the club and everyone was really happy and yeah we all loved it I think that's it from me I hope you enjoy thank you you
